Environment: Pollution no boundaries

Updated: 2006-04-14 15:22

China and the United States are working together to improve the world's environment, according to a top US environmental official. Stephen Johnson, administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency, summarized his meeting with his Chinese counterparts, from the State Environmental Protection Administration and Ministry of Water Resources, as "very productive." All countries should take their due responsibility for pollution without unfairly characterizing China and India as the only polluters, a senior U.S. official said in Shanghai Thursday. Steven Johnson, administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), made the remarks at the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai, in order to correct a report which misquoted him as blaming China for causing mercury depositions in the United States and exerting a "direct impact on the United States."
