Russian, Iranian FMs discuss Persian Gulf situation via phone
MOSCOW -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had a phone call on Monday with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi to exchange views on developments in the Persian Gulf.
The situation in the Persian Gulf has deteriorated sharply due to the aggression launched by the United States and Israel. Russia and Iran have expressed concern over the possible spread of the conflict to the Caspian Sea region, according to a statement published by the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Lavrov pointed to the categorical unacceptability of US-Israeli strikes against Iran's nuclear infrastructure, including the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant. Such attacks pose unacceptable security risks for Russian personnel and are fraught with catastrophic environmental consequences for all countries in the region, he said.
Araghchi thanked the Russian leadership for the diplomatic, humanitarian and other support provided to Iran.
