As Chinese New Year approaches, Zhang Sixian, 71, and his wife, Geng Meirong, make bamboo-weaving lanterns, an intangible cultural heritage from Shaanxi province with a 400-year history. [Photo provided to chinadaily.com.cn]

The lanterns come in flexible shapes, decorated with exquisite ornaments. They carry a stronger festival charm than mass-produced plastic ones. The fire wheel and star patterns are iconic in Xi'an's Bofang village, where the couple resides.

Bofang sits beside Jingyu Valley, home to forests of bamboo. The unique bamboo resources have enabled the village to pass down the bamboo lantern craft through the generations. Zhang has continued his family's craft for more than 40 years, and Geng learned it after they married.
