AU hails Senegal's AFCON triumph as symbol of African unity
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, congratulated Senegal on its Africa Cup of Nations, or AFCON, victory, describing the final as a showcase of African football's growing competitiveness, unity, and global stature.
Youssouf said the triumph symbolised continental unity and sporting excellence, praising the tournament's high standards and successful hosting.
"AFCON has once again demonstrated that the beautiful game is a powerful force for unity, bringing Africans together across cultures, borders, and generations," he said, commending all participating countries for elevating the quality of African football and showcasing the continent's depth of talent and resilience.
While acknowledging that moments of tension are inherent in high-level competition, Youssouf noted that the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play ultimately prevailed, reflecting the shared values at the heart of African football.
He added that the successful hosting of the tournament "reflects Africa's growing capacity to stage world-class sporting events that unite the continent and inspire global admiration".
The AU Commission chairperson also expressed appreciation to Morocco's king, government, and people for hosting the tournament, and praised the country's hospitality and the professionalism with which the competition was organised.
He wished Senegal, Morocco, and all African teams continued success as they carry Africa's pride and passion onto the global stage — "including at this year's World Cup".
Senegal secured the title with a 1–0 victory over the host Morocco in the AFCON final held on Sunday. The triumph marked Senegal's second AFCON title, adding to its maiden championship in 2021.
