Inner Mongolia to build 2,230 km of desert-crossing rural roads by 2030

North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region released the Implementation Plan for "Roads to Control Sand" in the Yellow River Bend Zone, Hexi Corridor, and Taklimakan Desert Fringe Defense Zone (2025–30) on Nov 24.

The plan aims to improve road networks in key desertification control areas, integrating road construction and maintenance with sand prevention efforts, and advancing the phased development of simple access roads, firebreak routes, and tourism roads.

By 2030, Inner Mongolia aims to build or upgrade 2,230 kilometers of desert-crossing rural roads, support the restoration of 1.53 million mu (102,000 hectares) of desertified land, and carry out 1,806 km of parallel maintenance projects.

The initiative is set to establish a comprehensive system that uses roads to block sand encroachment, protect farmland, and support ecological and clean-energy development, significantly enhancing rural road coverage and service capacity.

The new plan builds on the successful "roads to control sand" practices in the Horqin and Hunshandake sandy land regions, for which a development plan for 2024–30 was issued in August.

Once all planned projects across the three major zones are completed, Inner Mongolia will have constructed 8,593 km of desert-crossing roads, helping treat 13.54 million mu of desertified land.
