The Jianjiangyan irrigation system in Pengzhou, Sichuan province was designated a World Heritage Irrigation Structure on Wednesday at the 76th International Executive Council Meeting of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. To this day, this ingenious water management system still irrigates 10,800 hectares of farmland and plays a vital role in supporting local social and economic development, local officials say.

The Jianjiang River basin is one of the birthplaces of the ancient Shu civilization as it is home to the Sanxingdui Ruins, which are regarded internationally as one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th Century.
