Caught by the Tides, the latest film from award-winning director Jia Zhangke has been shortlisted for the prestigious Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

In an exclusive interview with China Daily's Spotlight, Jia revealed that this work, which took more than two decades to complete, aimed to capture the rapid developments and transformations of this era. He expressed his desire to share with the world authentic Chinese stories that are deeply rooted in real life. Jia also elaborated on his love for his home province Shanxi, which has inspired many of his movies thanks to its rich culture, especially the diverse mosaic of ancient architecture through a thousand years.
