HAIKOU - China's southernmost island province of Hainan has set a target to add 2,000 hectares of mangrove forests by 2025, bringing the total acreage of mangrove forests to 7,724 hectares in the province.

The tropical province has the most abundant mangrove resources in China. The province's newly published conservation plan designated an ecological red line for the areas of mangrove protection and restoration by holding municipal and county governments responsible for the mangrove protection within their respective administrative areas.

Seashore mangrove wetlands boasting rich biodiversity have become a highly valued ecosystem in the world, as they can form natural sea shelterbelts to prevent wind and waves, protect levees and shores, promote silt formation and purify seawater.
