Are 'five-star' public restrooms necessary?

HailChina! (Australia)

It is absolutely necessary for China to have great public toilets. It doesn't matter what it is - China must do it best, especially public toilets. We have all heard tourists in the past complain about Chinese public toilets but now because of this great toilet revolution the complaining will be a thing of the past.

I would agree that fancy toilets are a waste of money - like we don't need a guy playing a violin in there - but public toilets should be clean, well designed and nice. And there should be plenty of them. Now thanks to the toilet revolution we can all visit China with confidence.

In the big cities it is easy to avoid the toilet problem by using 5-star hotel toilets. In Shanghai I can recommend the Peninsula hotel next to the white monument at the Bund. Nice clean toilets and even real towels to dry your hands.
