US President Donald Trump's government will be faced with a tough midterm election in 2018. Although the approval of tax overhaul legislation is seen as one of his administrative achievements, Roy Moore, the Republican nominee in the 2017 United States Senate special election in Alabama, lost by 1.7% to Democratic candidate Doug Jones in December after being accused of sexual relations of minors.

The Republican Party won seats in the November 2014 midterm, gaining control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, over the Democratic Party led by then-president Barack Obama.
