As ancient Chinese people divided the year into 24 solar terms to mark the passage of time, Zhangjiagang residents have developed their own way to celebrate the various time periods.

Here are five things to know about the local traditions in celebrating the Start of Summer (Chinese: 立夏), the 7th term of the year, which begins on May 5 and ends on May 20 this year.

Sampling seasonal vegetables

Though most Chinese people will sample cherries, green plums and highland barley during the term, Zhangjiagang residents prefer the "three treasures" of amaranth, broad beans and garlic sprouts. The broad bean, boasting a fresh and sweet taste, is the locals' favorite.
